Our Name
Irazú (ēräsū')
American country named Costa Rica. Its name is believed to be a
corruption of Iztarú, which was the name of an indigenous village on the
flanks of the volcano.

It's interesting to note that due to the massive amount of eruptions that
took place many years ago, volcanic ash showered the surrounding area,
making it a very fertile land, ideal for Arabica coffee plantations. At
3,431 meters (11,257 feet) this volcano is also the highest in Costa Rica.
It is said that on a clear day it's possible to see both the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans; however, such clear days are very rare indeed, and it is
typical for the volcano's summit to be covered in cloud for much of the
time.
